The firebox skeleton is made of solid cast iron and has a grid-pattern cast iron frontthe original fireplace has now been converted to natural gas, so this rare antique is just sitting in the basement collecting dustthis is the original cast iron coal fire box which came with the coal fireplace in my house (which just celebrated its 100th anniversary)the entire box is mounted on steel legs and steel castors, with a cast iron bottom in it (complete with hinged debris tray for removing remnants and ashes)it has not been cleaned so shows its cast iron patina / age and from years of keeping residents warm ! since it is almost completely cast iron, the box weighs about pounds, approximately(so i am going to be pretty firm on the price)perfect for the cabin or the lake house, if it will fit in your fireplace spacethe back and sides of the box are made of sheet steel (not surprising) to handle coal being shovelled in and prevent contact damage or crackingi have been to a hundred estate sales and never seen one of these come up for auction, so they are not that common anymorenote - there is a small hole in the back of the box, made by something contacting it years ago (see picture, where it has been circled)any interior decorator will know exactly how to clean this item up and showcase it, as a rare display piece in many settingsthe rough dimensions are 12" (height) x 22" (width) x 11" (depth)
